Homestead Hospital: A Cornerstone of Health Care in South Miami-Dade

  • February 2026

Homestead Hospital has been a vital health care institution in southern Miami-Dade County for more than eight decades, evolving from a small community hospital into a modern, full-service medical center serving thousands of residents each year. Established in 1940 with just 10 beds, the hospital has grown significantly, now operating as a 142-bed facility that offers a broad range of services to meet the diverse needs of its community.

As part of Baptist Health South Florida, one of the region’s largest not-for-profit health systems, Homestead Hospital provides comprehensive medical care that includes emergency services, inpatient and outpatient diagnostics, surgical services, maternity care, and specialized rehabilitation programs. The hospital’s 24/7 Emergency Center, with 44 private treatment rooms and a dedicated Children’s Emergency Room, plays a crucial role in the area as it is the only hospital within a 20-mile radius, serving both urban and rural populations.

In addition to acute medical care, Homestead Hospital is recognized for excellence in nursing. It has earned the prestigious Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a distinction that signifies the highest standards of patient care and nursing professionalism.

The hospital also emphasizes community health and wellness through innovative initiatives like the Grow2Heal garden—a three-acre organic garden that supplies fresh produce to patients and local residents, supports nutritional education, and fosters community engagement.

Over the years, Homestead Hospital has become more than a medical facility; it’s a pillar of support for families throughout south Miami-Dade. By combining compassionate care, advanced medical services, and a commitment to community well-being, it continues to be a trusted health care partner for the region.
