The City of Florida City continues to invest in programs and services that strengthen the community, with a series of new initiatives designed to serve residents of all ages.
The City’s newly launched Senior Program has quickly become a welcoming gathering place for local seniors. More than 50 participants meet Monday through Friday at the Florida Youth Activity Center, where they enjoy games, fellowship, and nutritious meals catered by Garden of Soulfood. The program reflects the City’s commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for older adults to remain active, engaged, and connected.
“These programs motivate our seniors, many of whom live alone, by giving them the opportunity to socialize, build relationships, and remain active within the community,” said Mayor Charlotte Thompson. “We are committed to building a stronger community—from our youth to our seniors.
Florida City has also expanded access to educational resources through the launch of a new Bookmobile service, an initiative spearheaded by Vice Mayor Ronda Ferguson-Cobb. The program is a partnership between the Miami-Dade Public Library System and the Florida City Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), bringing library services directly into the community.
Residents can browse and borrow books, request materials by mail, and access the library’s digital collection 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Library cards are available to eligible residents. The Bookmobile is stationed at Florida City Hall on Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
On June 24, Florida City also partnered with TConnect to launch convenient driver services for residents. Available services include driver’s license replacement and reinstatement, Florida identification card issuance and renewal, vehicle registration renewals, and handicap parking permit applications and renewals, making essential government services more accessible to the community. The City’s commitment to community engagement was on full display during its 250 America Fourth of July Celebration at Fasulo Park, where well over 1,000 residents and visitors gathered to celebrate Independence Day.
Sponsored by the City of Florida City, Commissioner and Vice Chairman Kionne McGhee, 5 Top Movement and Ultimate Customs, the celebration featured a popular car show, a Kid Zone complete with a trackless train, pony rides, bounce houses, and, for the first time, a rock-climbing wall.
Entertainment throughout the evening included performances by Big D and the Band, BNS Production, a Mariachi band, a children’s choir, South Dade Steppers, Florida City local artists Woo, Cool Gotti, and Slip N Slide recording artist Mike Smiff. Comedian Rayzor served as host, while Miami Junkanoo energized the crowd before a spectacular fireworks finale.
