Anyone who has walked a South Dade sidewalk in August knows the difference a shade tree makes. More of them are on the way.
Miami-Dade’s Department of Environmental Resources Management has received a $150,000 grant from TD. The money supports Million Trees Miami and the Mayor’s Urban Forestry Plan, which aim to cover 30 percent of the county in tree canopy by 2030.
Part of the grant pays for free community tree and garden giveaways at TD stores, each running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The South Dade date to circle is Friday, November 6, at 2495 NE 8th Street in Homestead. Two other giveaways are set for September 4 at 801 W. 49th Street in Hialeah, and January 15, 2027, which is Florida Arbor Day, at 7400 SW 40th Street in Miami.
The rest of the money goes toward planting projects in parks. That includes “growing green” playgrounds with shade trees over the play areas, plus butterfly gardens and habitat for pollinators.
“TD’s commitment to Miami-Dade County is a powerful example of corporate citizenship in action,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Growing our tree canopy is a responsibility we all share. Every tree we plant helps protect our residents, create cooler neighborhoods and ensure a more resilient community for everyone.”
“This grant reinforces what true community stewardship looks like,” said Miami-Dade County DERM Director and Chief Resilience Officer Loren Parra. “Strong private partnerships allow us to reach new areas, give away more trees to our residents, bring more shade to streets and playgrounds, and even create colorful pollinator gardens. We appreciate TD’s vision and dedication to building a more beautiful, healthier, and greener Miami-Dade.”
Million Trees Miami was launched by Neat Streets Miami-Dade County, a board that works across city and county lines.
