The Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay has two very different ways to spend time there this October. One is spooky. The other gets your hands dirty.
Historic Ghost Tours
Tuesday and Thursday nights, October 1 through October 29, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Guides lead visitors through the historic Richmond Cottage and share stories about the people who lived on the land, from Indigenous people and early Miami settlers to Charles Deering himself. They also share the strange things visitors and staff say they have seen. The Stone House is closed for restoration this year, so the tour stays in the Richmond Cottage.
Tours are $45 per person, and Deering Estate Foundation members save 10%. The tour is for adults and kids ages 9 and up, and some stories are meant for older ears. Wear closed-toe shoes, bring your own flashlight and pack bug spray. Cameras are welcome.
Plan to check in at the Main Gate 15 minutes early. Tours start on time, and late arrivals are not let in or refunded.
Community Action Day
Saturday, October 10, 9 a.m. to noon
Spend a morning helping the estate’s land stay healthy. Volunteers pull invasive plants, spread mulch, plant natives and pick up litter. You must be 15 or older, and you need to sign up ahead of time through Miami-Dade Park Link.
Community Action Days happen on the second Saturday of most months. After October, the next dates are November 14 and December 12.
The Deering Estate is at 16701 SW 72nd Ave., Palmetto Bay. Call (305) 235-1668 with questions.
