Healthy school meals are getting a closer look in Miami-Dade. At the June 17 School Board meeting, board member Luisa Santos won approval for a request asking the Superintendent to report on the district’s Food for the Future Framework by October 2026.
The update will review the past year of work to improve student nutrition, cut food waste, and grow sustainability efforts. It will cover healthier meal options, composting and food recovery, student feedback on menus, partnerships with local food producers, fewer single-use plastics, and key health measures.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is one of the county’s largest food providers. The district’s Offices of Food & Nutrition, Maintenance, and Efficiency have expanded composting, improved access to water, and added more local foods, while keeping nutrition standards above national requirements.
“M-DCPS is one of the largest food providers in the county –serving over 200,000 meals per day,” said Board Member Santos. “As a former restaurant entrepreneur, I am excited about all M-DCPS is doing to ensure students receive healthy meals and all that we can do to make sure students feel like their daily meals are a central, positive part of their educational experience.”
The board first directed this review in July 2025. Staff will share the update at a committee meeting by October 2026. Families can read the full item at luisasantos.com/priorities.
