Homestead Breaks Ground on Landmark Krome & Flagler Infrastructure Project

The City of Homestead has officially launched one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects in decades, breaking ground on a multi-phase initiative that will transform the Krome Avenue and Flagler Avenue corridors while laying the foundation for the city’s continued growth.

City officials, community leaders, business owners, and residents gathered on June 30 for a ceremonial groundbreaking marking the beginning of the Krome Avenue & Flagler Avenue Water and Sewer Upgrades and Krome Avenue Transit Accessibility and Roadway Improvement Projects. The investment represents a major step toward modernizing critical public infrastructure while creating safer, more accessible streets for everyone who lives, works, and visits Homestead.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

While new developments often capture headlines, city leaders emphasized that strong communities begin with strong infrastructure.

The project will replace aging water and sewer mains along Krome and Flagler Avenues, increasing system capacity and reliability to meet the needs of Homestead’s growing population and expanding business community.

Beyond underground improvements, the project will also deliver visible upgrades throughout the corridor, including:

• New sidewalks and ADA-accessible pedestrian improvements
• Enhanced roadway drainage to address flooding
• Modern street lighting
• Landscaping and streetscape enhancements
• Updated pavement markings and signalization
• New transit amenities, including bus shelters and street furniture

“This project represents a major investment in Homestead’s future,” said Mayor Steven D. Losner during the groundbreaking ceremony. “These improvements will enhance essential services, improve mobility, support economic development, and ensure our infrastructure is prepared to meet the needs of our growing community for years to come.”

Construction is expected to continue through 2027, with work taking place in phases to minimize disruption while maintaining progress.

Although construction will inevitably bring temporary inconveniences, City leaders say the long-term benefits—including increased utility capacity, improved roadway safety, enhanced public transit access, and a more resilient infrastructure network—will position Homestead for continued success.

As one of the largest infrastructure investments in recent City history, the Krome & Flagler Avenue project reflects Homestead’s continued focus on preparing for future growth while investing in the essential systems that support everyday life.
