Race fans, this is your weekend. The NASCAR championship races are in Homestead, with a new champion crowned each day. Two big concerts fill the Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens, and Palmetto Bay is taking your old electronics and paint cans. Here is what to do in South Dade from Friday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Nov. 8.
NASCAR Championship Weekend
Friday to Sunday, November 6 to 8
Homestead-Miami Speedway, Homestead
Three series crown their champions in three days. The Truck Series Championship starts Friday at 7:30 p.m. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Championship starts Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cup Series Championship takes the green flag Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are sold on the speedway’s website.
Karaoke Night in Losner Park
Friday, November 6, 6 to 9 p.m.
Losner Park, 104 N. Krome Avenue, Homestead
The City of Homestead hosts a karaoke night in the park downtown. Pick your song and bring your friends. Heads up: the City says the Lucy Street and Krome Avenue intersection is closed for about a week starting Nov. 1 for sewer work, so plan a little extra drive time.
Fall Recycling Drive-Thru
Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Palmetto Bay Village Hall, 9705 E. Hibiscus Street, Palmetto Bay
Drop off old electronics, used pens and pencils, plastic bags and bubble wrap. You can also get rid of household hazardous waste like paint, bleach, pesticides, batteries and light bulbs. There is document shredding and a spot to donate gently used clothes. It is open to residents and businesses, so bring your driver’s license to show proof of residency.
Allyson Briggs and The Dan Gabel Big Band
Saturday, November 7, 8 to 10 p.m.
Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Road, Pinecrest
Jazz season opens at Pinecrest Gardens with a night of big band swing and Great American Songbook classics. Singer Allyson Briggs performs in as many as seven languages. Tickets run $45 to $60.
Orchestra Miami: Beethoven Triple Concerto
Sunday, November 8, 6 to 8 p.m.
Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Road, Pinecrest
Orchestra Miami turns 20 this season, and this concert kicks off the party. The program opens with Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the piece that started it all 20 years ago. Then comes Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and the night ends with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
