South Dade is getting a big new home for animals in need.

Miami-Dade County broke ground Tuesday, August 11, on the new South Dade Pet Adoption and Protection Center, a $25 million project at 29500 Harriet Tubman Highway. The ceremony ran from 10 to 11 a.m.

The finished building will cover 30,000 square feet. The county says it will expand access to animal care, veterinary services, and pet adoption for families on this end of the county, which has long meant a long drive for anyone hoping to adopt or get a pet seen.

The center is being built through a public private partnership. The county calls it a significant investment in South Miami-Dade.

Taking part in the groundbreaking were Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins of District 8, Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez of District 12, Miami-Dade County Animal Services Director Annette Jose, and Ivan Herrera, founder of UniCapital Asset Management Group.
