For a child entering foster care, the transition often happens quickly and with little notice. In those first uncertain moments, something as simple as a soft pillow, a favorite book, a new toothbrush, or a duffel bag for a teen to carry their belongings can provide more than a basic necessity; it can offer comfort, dignity, and a reminder that someone cares.
Initially made possible with the support of Miami-Dade County, Voices For Children’s Comfort Closet serves as a dedicated resource for children and youth experiencing foster care and the families caring for them. When a child first enters care, they can receive a Comfort Kit filled with age-appropriate essentials and comforting items to help ease their transition. But the support doesn’t stop there. Families, caregivers, and young adults who have aged out of foster care can return to the Comfort Closet throughout their journey to access items they may need.
Stocked through the generosity of community members, organizations, businesses, and donation drives, the Closet offers everything from toiletries, makeup, hair care and period products to pillows and blankets, school supplies, toys, books, sports equipment, bicycles, helmets, and more. Each item helps meet a practical need while supporting the stability and well-being of children and their families.

Recently, the Comfort Closet received a transformation of its own. Through Leadership Miami, the Dade Miami team partnered with Voices For Children to redesign and expand the space, creating a more welcoming, organized environment where children and families can access what they need with dignity. Their support also helped advance the creation of a Professional Development Suite, providing older youth with access to professional attire and career-readiness resources as they prepare for interviews, employment, and greater independence. The Professional Development Suite, coined the Success Closet, was made possible through the generosity of Decorini, who donated and installed shelving to convert an office space into a stylish closet.

The Comfort Closet is more than shelves filled with supplies. It is part of the safety net surrounding children and families throughout their foster care journey, responding to immediate needs while providing continued support as those needs change.
Because whether it’s a Comfort Kit on a child’s first day in care, a backpack for school, or professional clothing for a first job interview, every child and young person deserves to feel supported, cared for, and prepared for what comes next.
