PINECREST COUNCIL UNVEILS SW 120 STREET ART PROJECT

This month, the Pinecrest Council unveiled the SW 120 Street Art Project 2026, Traversal, the newest addition to Pinecrest’s public art collection. The space is dedicated by the Pinecrest Village Council to the residents of the Village. Approved by the Council in 2024, Traversal transforms a neighborhood pocket park into a space for reflection, exploration, and connection.

The installation is composed of 29 sculptural columns crafted from bronze, Corten steel, and textured glass, creating an immersive gateway that shifts and transforms with every step. As light filters through the artwork, Traversal invites viewers to change perspectives, slow down, look closer, and experience the surrounding landscape in an entirely new way.

Installed at one of Pinecrest’s historic crossroads, Traversal was designed by renowned artist Michael Szabo. The project supports Pinecrest’s Strategic Plan priorities of maintaining the Village’s residential character and enhancing the community — preserving streetscapes, upholding a high standard of public, recreational, and cultural spaces, and creating a welcoming new landmark for residents.

Traversal is more than a work of art, it also serves as a place to pause, explore, connect, and experience Pinecrest from a different perspective. Old Cutler Road & SW 120th Street.

Pinecrest is inviting residents to pull up a chair, speak their mind, and help chart the Village’s future. On Thursday, October 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Evelyn Greer Park, Vice Mayor Ken Fairman will host the next Conversations with Council, a free, open-floor event where residents talk directly with their elected leaders about the issues shaping daily life in Pinecrest.

The evening kicks off with a casual meet-and-greet, giving residents face time with the people behind the scenes. From there, the floor opens, and Vice Mayor Fairman invites residents to share their questions, ideas, and perspectives on what matters most to them.

PINECREST COMPOSTING PROGRAM EXPANDS, ADDS NEW LOCATION

Pinecrest’s award-winning community composting program is continuing to grow, giving residents more ways to turn everyday organic waste into a meaningful environmental impact. Launched in 2024 as a resident-inspired initiative, the program has made significant strides in just two years.

To date, it has diverted more than 226,400 pounds of organic waste from landfills and provided over 1,363 free home-composting bins, helping residents to bring composting into their own backyards and kitchens.

New Drop-Off Location

The program is expanding its reach throughout the Village and has installed a new compost bin at Evelyn Greer Park. The new location joins existing drop-off sites, with additional locations planned for Coral Pine Park and Veterans Wayside Park. The new and planned locations make it increasingly convenient for residents to participate.

Current drop-off locations:

-Pinecrest Community Center

-Pinecrest Gardens parking lot (two bins/look for the signs)

-Evelyn Greer Park

-Pinecrest Farmers Market every Sunday – You can pick up a free compost bin and drop off your food scraps at the Fertile Earth Worm Farm tent right next to the entrance of Pinecrest Gardens.

A NEW & IMPROVED VETERANS WAYSIDE PARK

This month, the Village celebrated the beautification of Veterans Wayside Park with a festive and memorable ribbon-cutting ceremony. Located on Pinecrest Parkway between SW 110th & SW 112th Street, Veterans Wayside Park and its enhancements honor our veterans while creating an inviting space for the entire community.

The facelift includes an enhanced Veterans Memorial, an expanded events space, ADA-compliant pathways and benches, and a beautiful new playground.

Additional improvements include a stone seating wall, a bioswale system that naturally filters stormwater into the pond, and native landscaping that beautifies the grounds while helping manage runoff. Together, these elements define the park’s unique spaces while showcasing the Village’s commitment to sustainable park design.

Thanks to the Village Council and everyone involved for their support in bringing this vision to life, creating a meaningful space for our community today and for generations to come.

PINECREST MUNICIPAL LAND-USE CODE AMENDMENTS

During its regular council meeting in July, the Village Council approved several amendments to the Village of Pinecrest Municipal Code designed to enhance the quality of life in Pinecrest. Now in effect, the updated codes will help to strengthen community aesthetics, public safety, and to support residents and businesses in their everyday life.

Some of the amendments include:

  • Allowing residential low-voltage landscape lighting within the public right of-way with a required permit.
  • Requiring garbage and recycling containers to be removed from the curb on the same day as the scheduled collection.
  • Prohibiting the feeding of peafowl to discourage the formation of large colonies and help reduce related nuisances.
  • Allowing one portable on-demand storage (POD) container on a residential property for up to 30 days.
  • Prohibiting contractors to park or store material on neighboring property during construction.

Residents are encouraged to review the adopted amendments to understand how these changes may affect their properties and daily activities. For more information, please contact Pinecrest Code Compliance at 305.231.2121.
